Shuhari (守破離) describes the stages of learning martial arts from beginner to mastery.

  • shu (守) means "protect", "obey": learning the fundamentals, obeying your teacher without questioning.
  • ha (破) means "detach", "digress": detaching from the fundamentals, forging your own experience.
  • ri (離) means "leave", "separate": transcending the teaching, all moves become natural. There are no techniques or styles anymore.

This Kakejiku is a "Maruhyoso Kakejiku": It is made in Japan with high-quality kifune donsu. The honshi is made of high-grade gasen-shi, a traditional paper made of natural fibers used primarily for Sumi-e (brush painting) and calligraphy.
