The traditional Shinken (Japanese sword) is held together with one or two small bamboo pegs called Mekugi. They are not glued or screwed into the Shinken, but still securing it tightly. However, a badly damaged Mekugi can be dangerous, and as it is easily removable and replaceable, here is the product you might need for your Iaito or Shinken.

This model is sized for our Minosaka Iaito lineup and may not fit in length/thickness with any type of Shinken.
