Temple Style Cotton/Polyester Samue
Japanese Cotton/Polyester Samue
Made in Japan
Material: 65% Polyester / 35% Cotton Â
Color: black or navy
Size: S, M, L, LL or 3L.
What makes this Samue special? It was designed by Buddhist temple monks so it suits their everyday needs to perfection. Among the main features they requested:Â
- Reinforced sleeves opening for better durability. Also allows great comfort when rolling up the sleeves.Â
- Zipper on the right pocket so nothing gets out when working hard.Â
- Internal pocket, designed at (big) smartphone size (yes, even monks have smartphones nowadays!).
- Elastic waistband + cord, so it can fit most body types.Â
- Reinforcement on the bottom for better comfort and durability when sitting for long hours.Â
- Double layer reinforcement on the knees, similarly for better durability when working on the temple's everyday tasks.Â
Monks wear Samue all day long and they have limited time for each of their daily tasks, so it was decided to use a cotton/polyester blend to improve washability and fast drying.Â
Solid, well-cut, this is a high-quality Samue model that will delight all enthusiasts of Japanese tradition, as well those seeking an original homeware or leisure outfit for a family outing at the weekend, or even Shiatsu practitioners.
The Samue is a garment that has many uses. Traditionally worn by monks in Zen Buddhist temples, artists, or even doctors, it is also widely worn as homeware, both at home, in the ryokan (traditional hotel), or at the onsen (hot spring). It is also found among players of the original Zen instrument, the Shakuhachi (traditional flute). In recent years, the port of Samue extended outside the home, as particularly comfortable informal clothing. Just like Jinbei, Samue is worn without a belt.
Sizing advice
A samue is designed to be loose, so a specific size will fit a very wide range of body shapes.
